Earning your master’s and advanced certificate in our dual program will give you New York State teacher certification to teach both physical education and health education to pre-K–12 students in schools, after-school physical activities or sports programs. At Adelphi, we believe that hands-on experience is key to setting our students up for future career success. This Health and Physical Education graduate program is structured around real-world opportunities from beginning to end. Hone your skills and boost your confidence in our health and physical education fieldwork internship courses, which include opportunities for those without a current teaching certificate to student-teach full time alongside a cooperating teacher, supervised by an Adelphi faculty member. Placements are available both in New York City and on Long Island, allowing you to tailor the experience to your needs, goals and schedule.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Graduate application and $60 fee
  • Online survey completed by two recommenders
  • Personal essay
  • Official transcripts from all prior institutions and proof of bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
  • Résumé (preferred)

All teacher certification candidates must take and pass New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) required for their particular area of certification, which includes the Content Specialty Test in both Physical Education and Health Education.

A dual health and physical education program lets you earn health education and physical education teaching certifications at the same time. At the end of your program of study, you’ll have New York state licenses in physical education and health education. Our dual program includes an MA in Physical Education and an advanced certificate in School Health Education, making you more marketable as many jobs require candidates to have both.

Physical education teaches K-12 students skills and concepts that will help them be active throughout their lives. The goal of health education is to provide students skills that will allow them to reduce risky health behavior. Physical education is taught in movement settings and health education is taught in the classroom.

The program is taught in-person with some classes offered online. The focus of the program is on creating community and personal connections with professors and peers while offering the convenience of learning online.

Graduate classes are offered Monday through Thursday evenings throughout the year, allowing you to move through the program more quickly. Adelphi offers rolling admission, which means that you have the option of starting the program at five different points throughout the year (fall semester, January Intersession, spring semester, or May or July sessions). Once you are admitted, you’re ready to go!

Adelphi University has quality instructors who care about you and make you feel welcome. Full-time professors work hand in hand with adjunct professors to help you acquire the teaching capabilities to create positive experiences for K-12 grade students. There are great networking opportunities with your peers and professors.
